The narrative of this work is a reflection on family life and the fragility of family dynamics; what is exposed when differing personalities and relationships surface during family gatherings. This work began after a family reunion where multiple issues surfaced during a weekend cabin retreat.
These prints are made by creating an image using scanned collage pieces, which is then digitally altered and printed on archival paper or canvas. Some are further layered and reworked by adding, ink, paint, found objects, fabric, or paper to the surface.

Joan Bemel Iron Moccasin is a fiscal year 2015 recipient of an Artists Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
Native/White combines personal family photographs with iconic Edward Curtis images to capture the blending of generations and cultures as I question how this fiction impinges on our experience of reality.
This series embodies the assumptions we make about others based on stereotypes. It explores myths and media stereotypes of Indigenous culture, American culture, and personal memories.

These 2D and 3D works explored the connection between my Lakota husband and myself as our relationship evolved. Understanding the differences between our childhoods, lifestyles, and the rituals we were brought up with, became a microcosm of understanding the world itself.
